Dr. Anthony Stefanidis is Assistant Professor with the National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis (NCGIA) and the Department of Spatial Information Science and Engineering at the University of Maine. He holds a Dipl. Eng. degree from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the The Ohio State University (1988 and 1993 respectively). His dissertation was in the area of digital image processing and analysis, and dealt with the use of scale space techniques for digital image matching. During his graduate studies at The Ohio State University he held Graduate Research Associate and Graduate Teaching Assistant positions. Upon graduation from The Ohio State University he joined the Institute of Geodesy and Photogrammetry at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, Switzerland as senior scientific associate (until 1995) and was involved in multi-disciplinary research projects dealing with 3-D image matching in technical chemistry applications.
Dr. Stefanidis is the co-director of the Digital Image Processing & Analysis Laboratory at the University of Maine. His expertise and current research activities are focused in the area of digital image processing for information extraction, video analysis, spatiotemporal knowledge management, integrated geospatial databases, and digital photogrammetry, and they are supported by grants from various sources including NSF, NASA, BAE Systems, NIMA, NRO, and others. Dr. Stefanidis is the chairperson of Working Group V/5 (Quick Response and Distributed Computing for Close Range Applications) of Technical Commission V (Close Range Vision Techniques) of the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. He has also served as Update Editor for Softcopy Photogrammetry for Photogrammetric Engineering & Remote Sensing , the official journal of the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing . Dr. Stefanidis is the author of books and numerous articles in journals, books and conference proceedings, has served as organizer, chair, program committee member, and session chairperson in scientific conferences. He is also a reviewer for NSF and various other scientific organizations and journals in his field of expertise, as well as an active member of professional organizations and honor societies (including Phi Kappa Phi).
His teaching activities include courses in digital video analysis (ISE 305), motion imagery analysis (SIE 535), and statistics for information engineering (ISE 405 & SIE 539). Dr. Stefanidis has also consulted for various companies and has served as visiting faculty at the Dept. of Ocean Studies at the Maine Maritime Academy .
