NASA Center of Excellence in Remote Sensing Applications

This generous grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) supports the infrastructure of a Center of Excellence in Remote Sensing Applications at the University of Maine. Its goal is to expand and integrate existing remote sensing programs in Spatial Information Engineering, Forestry, and Marine Sciences into a single Center of Remote Sensing Excellence. By linking the expertise, data, hardware, software, teaching, and outreach capabilities of these three departments, University of Maine integrates across disciplines and strengthens its position at the forefront of remote sensing technology and environmental research. Internal network infrastructure is being upgraded, while the installation of a server facilitates data sharing and cooperative research. Furthermore, teaching and research laboratories are substantially improved and modernized through acquisition of clusters of advanced workstations and digital image processing systems.

Coordinating principal investigators for this project are Steven Sader (Forest Management), Peggy Agouris (Spatial Information Engineering), and Andrew Thomas (Marine Sciences). Participating co-investigators are Anthony Stefanidis, Kate Beard, and Max Egenhofer (Spatial Information Engineering), and Alan Kimball (Forest Management).
