The scope of this intensive workshop was to bring together specialists from a variety of overlapping but not always interacting scientific communities and provide a centralized, high-quality forum for the presentation and discussion of research advances and the establishment of a long-term communication channel between participants. It was sponsored in part by the Information and Data Management Program of the Directorate for Computer and Information Sciences of the National Science Foundation (NSF). Support was also provided by the National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis (NCGIA).
