Project Summary:

In order to develop new research infrastructure at the University of Maine, two complementary, competitive research programs will be established. The new research program in Intelligent Spatial Technologies will focus on spatial information that is delivered in ways that match users' choices of concepts, languages, and styles of interaction. It puts a new emphasis on the integration of Geographic Information Science with software engineering. UMaine will form an Intelligent Spatial Technologies Institute (ISTI), which will provide a focal point for research and advanced education in mobile spatial technologies. ISTI will build from UMaine's existing research strength in geographic information science by bringing on board new faculty in spatial databases, spatial and spatio-temporal reasoning, and digital image analysis. The second research program will establish a research group in Biosensor Technology. ISTI will collaborate with the Environmental Sensor Research Group to investigate computational models for real-time environmental monitoring through arrays of micro sensors.
