Proposal Summary:

Analysis of aerial/satellite digital imagery typically employs very large amounts of image data. Ongoing developments on sensor technology, which result in finer resolution imagery and larger image dimensions, are pointing towards even larger data amounts. To properly analyze digital aerial/satellite images and to optimize their interpretability and the potential for information extraction from them, one needs to take full advantage of the spatial and temporal relationships among various images. This can only be realized if proper solutions exist for the management and retrieval of image data. This project deals with two issues within this broader context of designing an image data management system: (1) query-by-sketch operations and (2) multi-resolution image representation.
