Education:

I am currently a student in the PhD Program at the University of Maine Department of Spatial Information Science and Engineering, in the Sensor Science, Engineering and Informatics  IGERT program, funded by the National Science Foundation and the NGA.

M.A. Geography (GIS and Remote Sensing), Hunter College, New York, NY  2007

B.S. Electrical Engineering, Columbia University, New York, NY          1987

B.A. Math/Computer Science, Wesleyan University, Middletown, CT    1987

Professional:

Since graduating in 1987, my work has involved Software and Systems Development and Engineering.  I worked for a number of financial institutions as a systems developer before becoming a consultant.  After about seventeen years in industry, I returned to school to study Geospatial Information Systems and Remote Sensing.  I am proficient in “curly brace” languages (ie, C, C#, Java, C++), distributed software design and development, databases, real-time data, and working at the hardware/software interface.

Research Interests:

  • Sensor Networks, Ubiquitous Computing.

  • Development of in-network computation methods for ad-hoc, randomly-deployed “smart dust” sensor networks.

  • Geospatial Databases, Metadata, Data Representations, Cyber Infrastructure and SDI, particularly as related to architectures required to deal with large heterogeneous sets of spatiotemporal data generated by disparate collections of sensor systems and networks.

  • Application of Sensor Networks to situational awareness, for emergency response, hazard mitigation, environmental monitoring, and other uses via Visualization, Augmented Reality and Data Mining.

  • Use of Geospatial Information Systems and Remote Sensing for Humanitarian purposes.

Personal Interests:

SCUBA diving – PADI Master Scuba Diver, IANTD Technical Nitrox , Technical Wreck diver

Sailing – ASA

Robotics Mentoring – US FIRST Robotics
