How many people can you name that have given the university a half-million dollars with absolutely no strings attached on how the university can spend those funds? In addition to the research funds they have generated, the above listed individuals on average generated unencumbered income streams for the general UMS and UMaine budgets in excess of half a million dollars per person within the past five years (i.e. these ten people generated a total of sponsor indirect costs of $6,263,231). Such funds are an important source of general revenue that benefit the entire university community.
