Public Commons of
Geographic Information Science
The Public Commons of GIScience promotes the innovative production of intellectual resources. Emerging economic models arising from open source experiences are proving effective alternative options for the generation of new resources under certain conditions and circumstances. Although open source products are unlikely to completely replace commercial products, the emerging approaches sometimes provide far greater benefits for the progress of science, commercial businesses, industry, government and the general public. That is, both the economic and social benefits for society are greater. The goal of the Public Commons of GIScience effort is to explore emerging production models to determine instances where open access approaches may provide better or complementary means for the production of GIScience resources.
