SIE 101 INTRODUCTION TO SPATIAL INFORMATION ENGINEERING
TYPICAL SYLLABUS
Course Objectives
The purpose of this course is to introduce you to the broad range of topics encompassed by the term "spatial information engineering." An overview of the discipline includes introduction to the measurement sciences of surveying, geodesy, photogrammetry, and remote sensing; discussion of geographic information systems and related tools and techniques for analyzing, displaying, and communicating spatial data; and introduction of legal and professional issues. In addition, we will use the course to introduce basic software that you may find useful as you pursue your academic studies. We will also discuss ethical conduct in working with other students and in citing references. Each Fall, 1 credit
Course Materials
Some supplemental readings may be handed out by each lecturer. However, most materials for this course will be made available on the web (http:www.spatial.maine.edu/~onsrud) or under the FirstClass mail system at www.umit.maine.edu. You will need an account on the FirstClass System. Sign up in Shibles Hall if you do not already have an account. You also need to download the free FirstClass software if using FirstClass on your own machine. (Messages may be sent to the rest of the class at SIE101@umit.maine.edu)

Weekly Assignments
In addition to extra assignments as assigned throughout the semester, the regular weekly assignment is to complete a journal entry each week and deliver it to the First Class "Journal Entry" folder for SIE 101. Your journal entry is due by Monday at 5:00 pm for the preceding week’s session. In sending your entry, please title the name of your email (your last name - topic of the lecture) example: Smith-Remote Sensing.
Your journal entry must include the following: 1. session topic, 2. name of instructor, 3. one or two paragraphs summarizing the major concepts conveyed, learned, or discussed during the session, and 4. the url address of one or two web pages that provide more information on the topic. Each journal entry will be graded on a basis of twenty points. Late entries will receive no more than ten points and entries more than a week late will receive zero points. If for any reason the First Class system is down, send the entry by e-mail to onsrud@spatial.maine.edu or place a hard copy in my mailbox.
